Eastwood School Renewal

A renovation and revitalization project creating opportunities for the children and residents of the Eastwood Community and Jacksonville, Alabama, at large.

The Eastwood School as it is today.

Honoring the past

The Eastwood School, the current incarnation of Jacksonville's first school for Black education, has served the Eastwood community and Jacksonville for almost 100 years. While the school's mission is still vital, time has taken a toll on the building. Rather than removing the school, the Eastwood Foundation has decided to renovate it with support from the City of Jacksonville, creating a new community center to keep the dream alive.

Building for the future

The Eastwood School renovation will create a new hub for the community, providing space for special events and room for kids and adults to learn, play and socialize. The renovated building will provide facilities for studying, playing sports, games and more within a full-fledged community center.

HOW YOUR DONATION HELPS

Repair Infrastructure

The interior of the Eastwood School has been worn over time, exposed to the elements and vandalized. Renovations will see the roof repaired, graffiti painted over, the gym floor restored and classrooms brought up to a modern, comfortable standard. The newly-renovated space will provide the community with a safe place to play, exercise, study and work, while also instilling pride in Eastwood residents as a historic building is restored and providing more community center activities for residents on the southern end of Jacksonville.

Build a baseball field

A new baseball field will offer Eastwood residents and residents across the city the chance to participate in team sports, conduct practices and engage in friendly matches for various bat-and-ball games, while adding to the list of outdoor activities available at the Eastwood School, including disc golf and a playgroun.

pave a new parking lot

The refurbished Eastwood School will feature a modernized parking lot, transitioning from the existing pavement to a well-organized, user-friendly parking area. The upgrade will enhance safety for children and the elderly visiting the community center, and the improved parking lot will enhance the overall appearance of the facility, creating a more inviting environment for visitors.

“Our youth programs have grown so much that our present facilities are almost always booked. Reclaiming spaces like The Eastwood School will allow more members of our community to participate, while giving our current stakeholders even more opportunities.”
